Room in Rome

Unless you’ve been locked away in a closet somewhere, you know that the leaders of the Roman Catholic Church are at the Vatican right now, in Rome, choosing their next leader.  I am not a Catholic, but I have friends who are, and I’ve had a lot of discussions with one of them lately about the issues involved.  I’m following the proceedings in great part because of this, but also, I suppose, out of curiosity and the whole intriguing sense of intrigue about the process.
Still, I am not going to write about that.  This post is about the city: Rome.  As anybody who’s been there knows, Rome is much more than the Vatican.  Rome is a city of many layers – ancient, medieval, renaissance, baroque, modern.  No wonder it is called “La Citta Eterna,” the Eternal City.

So, given all of the coverage of Rome in the media these days – and also because I started watching the HBO series “Rome” last night – I’ve decided to post some pictures of the city beyond the Vatican (but with a few of that place, too, as seen from Castel Sant’angelo).  Some of these photos I’ve posted here before, some are new.
Whatever you may think of what’s going on there now, try to visit for yourself one day.
