Wedding Photos, Italian Style

Wedding Couple, Rome, 2009

So, tomorrow is the big day that everyone in the world has been waiting for.  (Well, some of the people in the world, at least.)  The marriage of William Windsor (I think that’s his name), whose grandmum happens to be the queen of England, to a beautiful brunette named Kate Middleton.  I guess people are just looking for something to celebrate.
I do not plan to be among those folks here on the east coast of the United States who plan to get up at four in the morning to watch the proceedings.  I get up early enough as it is to go to work (though not quite that early) and there’s no time for watching the telly.
Still, with the media all in a tizzy about the grand event, I’ve decided to get my blog into the spirit of things, too, with some wedding photos.  Not English wedding photos, but Italian!  I’ve been waiting for a good opportunity to do this posting, actually, so this seems as opportune a time as any.
When I visited Italy two years ago, I noticed that Saturdays in June are favored days for weddings and/or wedding photos.  I began seeing that on my very first day there.  I had arrived in Rome on a Saturday in June, and after getting settled into my hotel on the Via Cavour, not too far from the Coliseum and the church with Michelangelo’s famous statue of Moses, I decided to take a walk to the centro storico – Rome’s historic city center.  There, I decided to walk to the Pantheon, an ancient Roman temple dedicated to all of the gods and still in magnificent condition, mostly because it was converted into a church.  It is one of the most magnificent buildings in the world today.
So, while walking through the old streets on the way to the Pantheon, I looked down a side street on my left and I espied a bride and groom walking in the direction away from me.  It looked interesting, so I raised my camera and made the photo at the top.  A second photo followed, a little closer up, with the bride still walking away from me, holding up her gown to keep it clean, but with the groom turned around and looking at me with a bit of a grin.
What happened next???  Stay tuned to find out, as I’ll be posting more photos from this sequence in a few days.  For now, enjoy William and Kate’s wedding should you choose to tune in.

  1. Oh, I do love this! You are making me homesick with pictures of a side street in The Eternal City, and now I must tune in to see the rest of this series. I had forgotten about the Royal wedding day, so this was a beautiful way to remind us. Obviously, I won’t be getting up at 4 to watch.

Now. How are you liking Dancing with the Stars? You want Kendra to win, right?

I had a feeling that you might like these, Doctor J, and I’m glad you do. As I wrote, there’s more to come.

Kendra has not been my favorite but I did vote for her this week because I did like the way she shook her stuff – both those parts given to her by God and those not! Thank goodness that my favorite pro, Kym Johnson, finally has a good partner this time in Hines Ward (as opposed to The Hoff). I’d like to see them make it to the finals, but I was disappointed that Petra Nemcova was eliminated last week.

      What do you think?

      • OK. I can’t help it. I love Kirstie Alley and Maks. They are so authentic and adorable together. I’ve never seen him like a partner so much. Kym and Hines…big talent, you’re right. And Romeo is up and coming! Actually, all the finalists are talented this season. Kendra is my least favorite, although again I agree with you, she did shake it. She has really improved, too.

I will be watching Monday and Tuesday nights!

Do you think we can see the Royal Wedding on re-runs?

Gorgeous photo, Dave. Very topical too!

(Much more beautiful and spontaneous than all those awful formal “Royal wedding pictures” that we will be subjected to over the course of the next few days.)

How lovely! I had not put you in my list of blogs but will do so now
