Wedding Couple, Rome, 2009
So, tomorrow is the big day that everyone in the world has been waiting for. (Well, some of the people in the world, at least.) The marriage of William Windsor (I think that’s his name), whose grandmum happens to be the queen of England, to a beautiful brunette named Kate Middleton. I guess people are just looking for something to celebrate.
I do not plan to be among those folks here on the east coast of the United States who plan to get up at four in the morning to watch the proceedings. I get up early enough as it is to go to work (though not quite that early) and there’s no time for watching the telly.
Still, with the media all in a tizzy about the grand event, I’ve decided to get my blog into the spirit of things, too, with some wedding photos. Not English wedding photos, but Italian! I’ve been waiting for a good opportunity to do this posting, actually, so this seems as opportune a time as any.
When I visited Italy two years ago, I noticed that Saturdays in June are favored days for weddings and/or wedding photos. I began seeing that on my very first day there. I had arrived in Rome on a Saturday in June, and after getting settled into my hotel on the Via Cavour, not too far from the Coliseum and the church with Michelangelo’s famous statue of Moses, I decided to take a walk to the centro storico – Rome’s historic city center. There, I decided to walk to the Pantheon, an ancient Roman temple dedicated to all of the gods and still in magnificent condition, mostly because it was converted into a church. It is one of the most magnificent buildings in the world today.
So, while walking through the old streets on the way to the Pantheon, I looked down a side street on my left and I espied a bride and groom walking in the direction away from me. It looked interesting, so I raised my camera and made the photo at the top. A second photo followed, a little closer up, with the bride still walking away from me, holding up her gown to keep it clean, but with the groom turned around and looking at me with a bit of a grin.
What happened next??? Stay tuned to find out, as I’ll be posting more photos from this sequence in a few days. For now, enjoy William and Kate’s wedding should you choose to tune in.
